| Abstract | A common yardstick for measuring the level of consumerism in society is tourism. But this will not give the whole picture in China: the economy is too large and rapidly evolving for that. Since the five-day week was introduced in the cities last May, Chinese service companies have been expecting their profits to skyrocket thanks to weekend shopping sprees and leisure tours. There are conflicting reports about what has actually happened. |
