Abstract | Guangdong, Hong Kong's neighbouring province, aims to add 154 berths to its ports in the next five years and to raise throughput from the current 150 million tonnes to 420 million tonnes. Within the entire shipping industry, 146 companies claim to be in container service, but there are only 51 container terminals available for them to operate on. By the end of 1995, the government had approved nine foreign shipping firms' plans to set up solely owned subsidiaries and 59 joint ventures with overseas investors. |
