AbstractMinimising costs is considered an obvious way of maximising profits, but is it wise for industrialists to be thrifty to the point of harming the work force? In Hong Kong's and China's garment industries, one of the unobtrusive cost cutting choices manufacturers make is to provide their sewing operators with backless stools rather than proper chairs. A researcher and lecturer at Hong Kong Polytechnic is currently investigating whether this choice erodes productivity. Her results show that an ergonomically-designed chair can improve productivity by 30 percent and quality by 10 percent.
