| Abstract | The cover illustration is only a small vignette taken from a large vertical scroll. The entire composition depicts a slow, meandering river flowing across the page, emptying into a misty lake. The valley sides are flanked by high, precipitous mountains. Hua Yan's ability to portray the natural world - rather than the allegorical - is evident in his treatment of the mountains. |
