Abstract | A consecutive series of 24 Chinese American patients who presented with predominantly somatoform complaints is described. Cardiopulmonary symptoms, vertigo, and fatigue were prominent, whereas classical conversion symptoms were rare. The symptom profile of these patients seemed not to fit the current DSM-IV categories of Somatoform Disorders. Whether these patients should be diagnosed as having Neurasthenia, and whether their concurrent mood disturbances should be subsumed under the diagnosis of a Somatoform Disorder are issues that demand further research. Directions for future research are outlined. |
