Abstract | A decade ago the British Engineering Council devised a syllabus for a general engineering degree. Professor Alan Sim recommends a national curriculum for engineering degrees. His proposal is that engineering undergraduate courses should be restructured around a common national engineering syllabus designed to cover all the fundamental areas of science encountered in the major engineering disciplines. Specialist research and training should only be carried out at post-graduate level, producing multi-skilled engineers with a common technical language. In this article, the author asks: Is this an area where Hong Kong should show the initiative and go it alone? Should we be the first to have a national policy to produce general multi-skilled engineers? It would require great entrepreneurial co-operation between the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the universities and industry and why not? Hong Kong is noted for this kind of approach. |
