Abstract | Ambassador Charles Freeman, distinguished fellow at the US Institute of Peace, has served in a number of diplomatic posts, most recently as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, where he was a key player in designing a NATO-centerd, post-Cold War European security system. Freeman was US ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War and, among other posts, served as translator to President Nixon on his historic visit to China in 1972. He spoke with the author after presenting a keynote address on the PRC as an emerging regional and world power at the annual China conference of America Chamber of Commerce. |
