Abstract | Like many other parts of Asia and the Pacific, China has developed its own style of a more courteous and consensual approach to decsion-making, which is in sharp contrast to the "peculiarly assertive, confrontational and adversarial" values of Western societies. Thanks to this approach, China's economic growth has clipped along at 18.6 per cent, 13.4 per cent and 11.8 per cent in 1992, 1993 and 1994 respectively. But more compelling factors behind China's phenomenal growth are to be found in the actual conditions of the economy itself. As a top planner in Beijing wrote recently: "China has no choice but to develop its economy as quickly as possible. The solution to a host of social and economic problems depend on quick development." |
