| Abstract | Chinese leaders are aware of the danger they face running an economy characterized by an ever-growing dichotomy between a robust market sector and an uncompetitive state sector. And they do not have a lot of time. All the moves they have recently pleged to take for admittance to the World Trade Organization will in the next few years create a more open and competitive market in China. This adds up to an even deadlier threat to the old SOEs that can't or won't swim with the tide. |
