AbstractIt is well-documented in the western literature that families living with and caring for a relative with schizophrenia experience a considerable financial, social and emotional influence. This paper presents and discusses the findings of the data from a survey of interviewing one hundred Hong Kong Chinese primary carers. The impact was examined in three areas (1) the patients' behaviour associated with the illness and their effects on primary carers, (2)difficulties encountered by the carers resulting from caregiving, which included financial strain, restriction of social activities, impairment of health or well-being, influence on job conflicts with family members, not taking good care of other family members and disturbance of domestic routines, and (3) emotional and pyschological impact.
