AbstractIt is not surprising that Beijing is still a city of sharp contrasts in terms of living standards. Basically, this is because of the relatively low productive and, consequently, low-income level of the world's most populous country. Despite China's economic success since the reforms, it may well take a few generations yet before its standard of living can be brought on a par with developed nations.
