Abstract | As crowded as Calcutta, as decadent as Berlin, as snooty as Paris, as jazzy as New York - Shanghai in the 1930s and 40s was a giant among cities. Home to magnates and gangsters, missionaries and laborers, refugees and artists, the place was, in its prime, China's most urbane conurbation, a metropolis that exhibited all the hues of the human character. No modern Asian city, not even Tokyo of Hong Kong, has been able to claim its cosmopolitan reputation. |
