| Abstract | The tension that has erupted across the Taiwan Strait over the past few months appears to have dissipated as President Jiang Zemin and President Bill Clinton prepare to meet in New York early next week. Jiang told a visiting US press group that the mainland welcomed visits by leaders from Taiwan in an appropriate context and mainland leaders would also accept invitations to visit Taiwan. Any visit or meeting must, however, take place under the premise of "one China." |
