| Abstract | As the lights dimmed and the TV cameras began taping a performance by Chinese lion dancers, the audience broke into delighed applause. Once the opening number was under way, the show's organizer, Cao Li, heaved a sigh of relief. Li is one of the few female TV producers in China. Although a number of freelances now sell shows to the state-run China Central Television, even male freelances have a hard time bucking social trends. |
