| Abstract | Bad enough that the government turned a blind eye to illegal rooftop structures that transformed some residential buildings into fire traps for as long as 20 years. Bad, too, that its coffers grew from rates collected on the hazardous structures. Now comes a claim that a building inspector extracted payoffs from some of the landlords who flouted the law in their drive for revenue. The allegation comes amidst a government drive to level many unauthorised structures, scores of which were demolished in Tsuen Wan recently. |
