| Abstract | When China test-fired missiles into waters north of Taiwan last month, many thought the move would be a one-off display of anger over the recent visit of President Lee Teng-hui to the United States. But a week ago, Beijing began a second series of maneuvers involving naval vessels as well as missiles. It is clear that mainland authorities have embarked on an extended period of psychological warfare designed to deter Taipei from what they consider a course to independence. |
