| Abstract | Hongkong's banking industry is entering a slower period of growth as the domestic economy gears itself for more difficult times ahead, this year and the next as well. Costs are a major worry for banks, big and small, and the fight to retain staff will continue to be troublesome. There is the uncertainty in the run-up to 1997 when sovereignty of Hongkong transfers from Britain to China. The impending takeover has already precipitated much change in the corporate sector. |
