| Abstract | The "pro-Beijing" and "pro-democracy" camps of the territory's leading politicians represent two mutually exclusive concepts even as Hong Kong's return to China approaches. But while consistent opposition to Beijing may win votes for local democrats, it does little to encourage productive debate, alleviate anxieties or ensure a viable political future for either the territory or its democratic forces after 1997. |
