AbstractThere are a number of key concepts in school mathematics. Some such concepts identified in this paper are the development of symbol sense, the manipulation of more than one variable, the concept of finite sequences, the making of shapes, and the comprehension of the third dimension. If students have difficulty in understanding these concepts, the difficulty will form conceptual barriers. The paper suggests ideas for helping students fare better in the acquisition of the concepts.
