| Abstract | Between now and then, says a Ministry of Communications official, the central government has mandated construction of 3,000km of expressways and nearly 20,000km of new trunk roads. Most of these will link centres in the coastal provinces where congestion threatens paralysis at peak periods. Zhang Zhiqiang, deputy director of the ministry's highway administration, says the immediate priority is building new roads linking Beijing with Shanghai and Shenyang in Liaoning province; and Chongqing in landlocked Sichuan with Beihai in coastal Guangxi. |
