AbstractChina, India and South Korea are nurturing some of the planet's most unbalanced populations. Worldwide the natural birth rate is 106 boys for every 100 girls. In China the ratio is 117 boys for 100 girls, and in Korea, 120. Programs to limit family size in China and Korea have only increased the pressure for women to bear sons - or in China, a son. Modern fetal sex-testing technology, and access to abortions, vastly improves the odds of doing so. In India, where tests are often too expensive for the rural poor, daughters are neglected. They get less food, less medical care and less education than do their brothers.
