AbstractChina has edged its way up in the ranks of social development from the world's 71st in 1989 to 67th, claim some researchers at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Institute of Sociology. In their evaluation system, which takes into account factors ranging from gross domestic production growth to per capita intake of calories and consumption of energy, so far six Asian societies are ahead of China - Japan (14), Singapore (22), Hong Kong (25), South Korean (28), Malaysia (41) and Thailand (62).
