| Abstract | Two popular brief cognitive mental status questionnaires, the MSQ and MMSE, were administered to all the new geriatric outpatients referred to a local government psychiatric clinic for a period of 8 months and studied with respect to their clinical diagnoses. The MSQ and MMSE were found to be valid and sensitive instruments in differentiating between dementia and non-dementia cases with cut-off scores at <5 and <17 respectively. Limitations of this pilot study, the usefulness of these questionnaires in clinical settings and as screening instruments were discussed with suggestions for future studies. |
