AbstractBronchiectasis used to be common after World War I following war epidemics of influenza and pertussis. Its incidence in developed countries declined with the development of vaccinations and antibiotics for prevention and treatment of pulmonary infection. In Hong Kong, government statistics show a hospital admission rate of about 16.4 per 100,000 population, and a mortality rate of about one per 100,000 population in 1990, both of which have been rather steady in the years 1980 to 1990.
