| Abstract | The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) profit of $20.6 billion in 1993 was after a deduction of $15.5 billion provided for bad debts. This charge was 43 percent of the gross profit, which must surely imply that the banks' accounting policy still remains highly conservative, and that the directors have sought to contain profits to as low an amount as could be realistically feasible. |
