AbstractThe article analyses the outcome of patients undergoing cardiac transplantation for end-stage heart failure in Hong Kong. An outcome analysis of cardiac transplantation was performed over a seven-year period from December 1992 to November 1999 at a tertiary referral cardiac centre in Hong Kong. Twenty-three patients underwent cardiac transplantation for end-stage heart failure refractory to medical therapy or conventional cardiac surgery. It is attempted to determine the survival rates, functional class, exercise capacity, allograft function and complications in this cohort and to compare the local data with the registry data available from the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). All except one patient were successfully discharged from hospital on an average of 31 days after transplantation.
