AbstractMastalgia is a common symptom in premenopausal women. This results from aberration of normal development and involution of breast tissue. Patients should be assessed carefully to exclude underlying malignancy. If the patient is suffering from idiopathic mastalgia, she should be reassured. Non-pharmaco-logical treatment (i.e. support bra and avoidance of hormones) is adequate for mild symptoms. Simple analgesic and gamolenic acid can be given with minimal side effects. More specific treatments include bromocriptine, tamoxifen and danazol.
