AbstractThroughout the world, the principles of family practice, or family practice and primary care, remain the same: to provide the best possible clinical care for patients within their own environment. In order to achieve this, family practice needs a firm research base, not only to define and to teach the discipline, but also to provide evidence upon which to practise high quality clinical care. Recent changes within the United Kingdom (UK) reflect the increasingly important role of research and development (R & D) in primary care and, although family practice in Hong Kong differs in many ways, S. Shaw and Y.H. Carter share in the article the UK experience from which Hong Kong physicians may be able to learn.
