AbstractCholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae. After adherence to the intestinal epithelial cells via the pili, cholera toxin is produced which disrupts the ion transport by intestinal cells, leading to massive loss of water and electrolytes. The article features the reservoir of cholera and the mode of transmission. Laboratory diagnosis, as well as treatment and control of cholera are illustrated.
