Article TitleMixed signals : Beijing should speak with one voice on the renminbi.
Is Part OfAsiaweek ; v.24, no.34, 28 Aug 1998, p.20, illus.
AbstractSince the financial turmoil in 1997, China's leaders have sweared their unalterable determination to maintain the value of the renminbi (RMB). On the other hand, they issue not-so-veiled threats to devalue if the Japanese and the Americans fail to stop the fall in the yen. The article features the pros and cons for the devaluation of the RMB, as well as the opinion of some Chinese officials who favor a modest depreciation of the RMB.
