AbstractA record-breaking 59 entries to the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) Annual Awards 1998 made the job for 1998's award jury an even greater challenge than in previous years. The completion of some of Hong Kong's most dramatic architecture associated with the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) -- named as one of the top 10 construction achievements of the century -- added international weight to the event. However these still had to be measured against less visible but equally valid work such as the meticulous renovation of the Ohel Leah Synagogue. Entries also went right across all possible project types from urban renewal to industrial buildings, large housing estates and transportation facilities.
