| Abstract | The article features a report compiled in late July 1998 by the Indonesian human rights group, Volunteers Team for Humanity, on gang-rapes of ethnic-Chinese women and children that engulfed Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia on 13-15 May 1998. The United Nations Development Fund for Women maintained in early August that the rapes, at least 168, had been planned to terrorize the Chinese community. The article features the worsening ethnic tensions and the public anger over the brutalization which has boiled over Taiwan and in Hong Kong. |
