Abstract | The currency re-alignment of Southeast Asian countries, which extended northwards towards the end of 1997, has worsened into a regional financial crisis. While some Southeast Asian countries have shown marked growth in the exports of primary products, exports of manufactured goods generally recorded a decline in the few months before April 1998. Against this background, the impact of the Asian currency crisis on Hong Kong's export competitiveness has not been apparent. Looking at the crisis-hit Asian economies as markets of Hong Kong exports, the impact is more apparent on consumer goods. All in all, the Asian currency crisis should not have a marked impact on Hong Kong exports in the short term. |
