AbstractAlthough Chinese textile and apparel exports are at record levels, Chinese imports of textile machinery have dropped significantly over the two years prior to 1997. After several years of heavy textile machinery imports, lower imports reflect completed modernisation of many factories as well as industry consolidation. The development of a strong, internal textile equipment industry does not appear to be a factor. Chinese textile machinery exports reached $166.5 million through July 1997 and more than half of this volume was industrial sewing machines, suggesting internal production is not significantly displacing imports.
