Abstract | Vain, pampered and selfish; obsessed with pop culture, make-up and clothes -- these are some of the withering comments often aimed at young people in the West. But in Hong Kong, with its strong work ethic and family values, the young generation is popularly considered to be focused and success-oriented. To find out what members of the so-called generation-X really think about their home turf, their parents and their place in the world, Hong Kong Tatler dispatched a brief, but probing questionnaire. While many 20-something-year-olds were happy to talk candidly about their career and their relationships, the majority seemed reluctant to guess what their parents thought of them, to name a hero, or (curiously) to list the contents of their handbag or briefcase. Replies from the 12 best respondents are reprinted in the article. |
