AbstractIn most countries of the world, integration starts with children with sensory and physical impairments. When it comes to children with mental handicap, people often raise the question 'These children are intellectually disabled, can they be integrated?' Children with visual or hearing impairment have normal intelligence but integrating children with mental handicap becomes a big challenge. The article features the current development of teaching children with mental handicap in Hong Kong. Topics discussed include the classification systems of mental handicap, relationship between children with mental handicap and mainstream school teachers, a new pilot project on integration of children with special educational needs in ordinary schools, factors contributing to difficulties in learning, strategies in supporting children with mental handicap and successful inclusion for children with mental handicap.
