Is Part OfHong Kong science teachers journal ; v.20, no.1, 1997, p.70-73.
AbstractIn 1995, over one million entrants from fourteen countries participated in the International Competitions for Schools (ICS). These annual tests for the upper grades of Primary Schools and all levels of secondary school are designed to provide students with an external independent assessment of their performance relative to that of other students from their country and from the Asia Pacific region. In Hong Kong and Macau 45 secondary schools with close to 7,500 entrants participated in the 1996 Competitions as compared to 28 schools in 1995. Students of today will have to compete tomorrow in a global employment market where the premium will be on universal knowledge, critical thinking and creativity. The article features the aims of the ICS, and the feedback from the Competitions. It also discusses the characteristics of the Competitions and the Target Oriented Curriculum.
