AbstractStarting with the baht devaluation on 2 July 1998, most of the Asian region's currencies have lost between a third and four-fifths of their value. Banks, conglomerates and companies have foundered or sunk in a sea of high-interest debt. The article looks back the financial turmoil and economic catastrophe 12 months prior to July 1998, and attempts to divine the way forward for the region. Special features will recapitulate a year of analysis and argument on the causes of the Crisis and its chronology, the lessons to be learned, the pros and cons of International Monetary Fund (IMF) programs, and the impact of the slump on prominent and not-so-famous people. The prospects for 16 key economies of Asian countries and investment options amid the recession are outlined in the article.
