AbstractFor almost 20 years, if a foreign company wanted to do serious business in China, there was only one way in the door: setting up a joint venture (JV) with a Chinese state-owned firm. Now JVs are on the wane among China investors. In a prelude to a switch to western-style joint-stock and holding companies, wholly foreign-owned enterprises (WFOEs) are all the rage. The article features some benefits of WFOEs and discusses problems they faced.
