Abstract | China expects its economic growth from 1998 to 2001 will remain relatively strong in a region wracked by currency crises in 1997. At the same time, China needs to tackle the serious environmental problems that have arisen from rapid growth of industries and population. Anxious to tackle the problem before it becomes intractable, the government approached the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with an environmental improvement project for the three-city area, Xi'an, Xianyang and Tongchuan. Physical infrastructure (including energy development), social infrastructure and financial services are other sectors that ADB emphasizes in its China lending. |
