AbstractIn 1997, "El Nino" phenomenon disrupted trade winds and weather patterns in half the world. Typhoons pounded the western coast of North America. Prolonged drought in Asia destroyed crops in China and permitted forest fires in Indonesia to burn out of control, blanketing much of Southeast Asia with a persistent haze. What El Nino has wrought, some scientists believe, is "green-house" effect resulting from the steady buildup of emission of carbon dioxide by the burning of petroleum by cars and coal in electric power plants. The developing nations are to be blamed for their industrial emissions. The article talks about why the developing countries should cut a deal on greenhouse gases. The situation in China is mentioned.
