Abstract | In April 1997 in Taiwan, Chen Ching-hsing and two accomplices, Lin Chun-sheng and Kao Tien-min, kidnapped Pai Hsiao-yen, the 17-year-old daughter of Television star Pai Ping-ping and demanded a $5 million ransom. The girl was found dead the day following an attempt to make a ransom drop failed. Finally, Lin and Kao died, Chen was arrested after he had taken the South African military attache McGill Alexander and his family hostage. The crime spree was over. Still hard questions remain to be addressed regrading organised crime, the police, and the legal system. |
