AbstractThe day after the close of the 15th Communist Party Congress in Beijing in September 1997, President Jiang Zemin introduced China's newly anointed inner circle - the seven members of the Politburo standing committee, who will steer the nation's course between 1998 to 2002. Jiang had pushed through a reformist blueprint for the nation, vanquished his oppositions, elevated his allies, thus unequivocally established himself as China's supreme leader.
