Abstract | The outlook for a large chunk of Asia has gone from sunny to overcast. In South-east Asia, four formerly fast-growth economies have experienced a sharp currency depreciation. To a larger degree, however, poor, and frequently venal, leadership is slowing development of these economies. China, is continuing its gradualist approach to liberalisation whereas Hong Kong is doing neither particularly poor nor particularly well after the handover. |
