| Abstract | The importance of clinical nurse specialists (NSs) to the nursing profession has generally been recognized. The article presents a study which reveals the facets of the work of clinical NSs in a particular hospital in Hong Kong. A case study approach was used in which the data collection strategies included interview, review of documents and participant observation. Findings showed that NSs manifested several distinct work features which were not present among rank and file hospital nurses. This study also suggests that the boundaries of NSs were not clear and the nursing profession did not have a strong voice in defining its own specialties. |
