AbstractMany footbridges in Hong Kong are constructed of a prestressed concrete deck resting on bearings which are inserted in halving joints between the deck and the column heads. A common practice is to concrete the deck insitu at a higher level so as to facilitate the stressing operation. The deck is then lowered into position but this operation involves certain degree of risk as it requires the temporary supports to be adjusted while they are still loaded. The article focuses on the elimination of the bearings such that the columns and the deck form a portal and the deck can be stressed without the high risk of lowering process.
