Abstract | In Taiwan, cancer had overtaken all other diseases as the leading cause of death. There were no specialised institutions specifically dedicated to prevention, treatment and research in cancer and to the professional training of oncologists. The arrival of National Health Insurance (NHI) in 1994 promised to add financial impediments to the management of this kind of institution. A bold spirit with a strong sense of mission was needed to get things started. Dr. Andrew T. Huang and Dr. R. Wayne Rundles first saw the need. With the support of government, Drs. Huang and Rundles's vision became a reality. Over the past seven years, the Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Centre (KFSYSCC) developed into a first-rate refurbished temporary space rented from the Jen-Ai hospital in the centre of Taipei. This article introduces the multidisciplinary approach and discussed architectural design and interior special planning by the KFSYSCC. |
