| Abstract | In their declarations after the death of Deng Xiaoping, Chinese and foreign leaders unanimously saluted the passing of the architect of Chinese economic reform. Reactions gathered from Chinese intellectuals or from the man on the street at the time of the funeral, however, suggested a more finely-shaded picture of Deng's economic legacy. |
