AbstractBy the end of 1996, Hong Kong will have legislation specifically designed to protect privacy. The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance will require all business in Hong Kong to comply with fair information practices when they collect, hold, process or use personal data. Individuals will be given the right to confirm who holds personal data on them, to be given a copy of such information, to have any inaccuracies corrected and, perhaps most importantly, to claim compensation if they suffer damage as a result of a failure to comply with the Ordinance. A Privacy Commissioner has already been appointed and has extensive enforcement powers.
