Abstract | Dhanin Chearavanont was bowled over. The Thai tycoon was in Shanghai presiding over the opening of the CP Group's Lotus hypermarket. Throughout the late day of 1997, some 200,000 shoppers rushed to buy 29-inch television sets, microwave ovens, T-shirts and other products priced up to a third less than in other shops.
